In the United States of America, you are not guilty of a crime unless and until you are convicted beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Michael Jackson was never convicted of child molestation. He was indicted, then acquitted (i.e. "not guilty"). While many hold the *opinion* that he is a child molester, he was, by legal definition, never such a thing.

A moment of silence is appropriate for someone who set the gold standard for American pop culture in music and videos. Whether there should *also* be a moment of silence for the victims of Islamic fascism in Iran is a separate issue. (Yes, there should be.)

Technically, being "acquitted" is not the same as being "not guilty". A prime example of this is OJ Simpson. We can legally say he did not kill his wife and Ron Goldman.
However, regardless of whether he molested those boys, or simply acted "inappropriately", his death does not warrant 8 hour specials on every channel from MTV to Fox news. He was a talented singer/songwriter/showman, so a mention and/or a 10 minute segment on his accomplishments would be sufficient. The preemption of hours worth of programming shows that we as a culture have lost our values, and are unwilling to recognize what is important.

The fact that congress has ignored the important world shattering (and possibly shaping) events in Iran, the bravery and thuggery that is continuing there to this day, but no one in either party has suggested a prayer for those seeking freedom and democracy, many whom have lost their lives at the hand of the current brutal regime makes me enraged, sad and ashamed.
