Ontario's largest university workers' union is proposing a ban on Israeli academics teaching in the province's universities, in a move that echoes previous attempts to boycott goods and services from the Jewish state.
The resolution, proposed by CUPE's Ontario University Workers Coordinating Committee, is in protest against a Dec. 29 bombing that damaged the Islamic University in Gaza.
"In response to an appeal from the Palestinian Federation of Unions of University Professors and Employees, we are ready to say Israeli academics should not be on our campuses unless they explicitly condemn the university bombing and the assault on Gaza in general,"said Sid Ryan, president of CUPE Ontario.
The resolution is still being drafted but the union said it will seek to prohibit Israeli academics from speaking, teaching or researching at Ontario universities. The CUPE committee will distribute the resolution to its members at the end of the month.

A small point but it's a public service union that includes university workers. I also sense that there's going to be a lot of opposition to it. Many members are not in favour of the motion, not to mention the general public. Others see the union leadership as involving them in something that is not the union's business; a lefty form of corruption in using your work provider to further your own political aims.

Hmmmm....now let me get this straight. Ban Israeli professors unless they condemn Israel's actions. Is that sort of like banning Islamic professors who refuse to condemn Hamas, Iran, and others who call for the extinction of Israel? Has anyone condemned suicide bombers? Islamist terrorists? That will be Canada's loss and hopefully a gain for American universities. I never thought I would live to see the day an institution in a democratic society banned Israelis. Wait, is this a repeat of ......Germany?

I recommend a book for all to read: Liberal Fascism. You don't have to buy it. It's at your local library in the USA, but might not be available in Canada where freedom of speech/thought is under seige since the muzz became the new, protected "minority" (post 9-11).
As I recall history, the National Socialist Party throughout the 1930's purged all Jewsih academics/scholars from German and, later, Austrian universities. And so it begins... in Canada...
History repeats itself, hoser.
Two hundred years ago there were people known as "classical liberals". Today those same people would be called "conservatives".
Some 80-90 years ago what today we call liberals started down the road to fascism. And they have arrived and control way too much in everyday society.
