Meanwhile, a Syrian analyst on Friday said Syria would be prepared to restrain the militant activities of Hezbollah and Hamas if a U.S. administration led by President-elect Barack Obama shifts its policy toward Damascus.

In an article published on Friday on the Asia Times Web site, Syrian analyst Sami Mubayed called on Obama to endorse the renewed peace talks with Israel to ensure their success.

Mubayed, whose analyses are considered the official standpoint of the Syrian government, urged Obama to "normalize" relations between Washington and Damascus.

Such "normalization" of ties would include dispatching a new U.S. ambassador to Damascus, the first since the deterioration of the states' ties in 2005.

Syria would also demand that the economic sanctions against it be dropped, a change in Western rhetoric toward Damascus and compensation for the recent deadly U.S. air strike in which eight Syrians were killed.

In exchange for U.S. implementation of these demands, Syria would be ready to use its weight in the region against the militant activities of Hezbollah and Hamas, and would work in tandem with Western powers to find a solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

Mubayed said that Syria has nicknamed Obama "Abu Hussein" - in reference to the president-elect's middle name.

"When all this is done, Syria will be ready to open its arms to Abu Hussein and to accept him maybe as an honored guest in Damascus, as we did with Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton,"wrote Mubayad.

What a crock. Thing is Obama(MCF) will lap it all up, figuring he'll get a Nobel Prize out of it. Forget it-this will end up like what I'm currently reading about-Arafatpig and the Oslo peace deal. Side A gets all that it wants while giving nothing in return to Side B and as all this happens Side B keeps believeing and saying Side A is sincere just so it can have a "peace partner" and keep on deluding itself. We see the results of Oslo every day in the headlines-now the Syrians want to duplicate this with the US.
And like the fools Rabin and Peres Obama (MCF) will likely fall for it.

If they actually abandon Hamas, Hezbollah and presumably Iran this would be well worth it. They are Irans staging ground for weapons and money to go to these groups. I don't think they would stand by their word though. I just have a feeling. Might be worth a shot though.

Abu Hussein makes no sense. I'm trying to learn Arabic and I know just enough to know that Abu means "father of" like Osama bin Laden goes by Abu Abdallah because his favorite son is named Abdallah. Barack has no son named Hussein so I don't really get it. He could go by Abu Sascha wa Malia. Father of Sashca and Malia but as it turns out they don't usually have the pride in their daughters over there to ever have these nicknames.

I wouldn't trust those guys for a second. After all, lying to infidels to attain goals is not only OK by the Koran, it's virtually a command. Besides, Syria has no pull on Iran-their supreme simian will get his nukes because he needs to bring home his Mahdi via Armageddon. He won't listen to a bunch of non Shiite, non Persians anyway. As for Hamas and Hizbollah nothing will detain them from their goal of destroying Israel-even if Syria did stop supporting them they'd get all that they need from some other source. And when all this happens, Syria will say "we tried, we really did, but they just didn't want to listen to us". In other words, same old BS.
