Police in India say some areas of Mumbai are under siege in what appears to be a terror attack.

It is believed up to seven sites may have been targeted simultaneously.

According to Indian television, at least 25 people have been killed and many are wounded in the heart of the crowded city after shots were fired by gunmen in the passenger hub of a main train station. They entered and started firing - some reports say grenades have been used.

New Zealander David Clemmett and his wife Vinka are trapped in their Mumbai hotel room. He says they heard pistols, rifles, shot guns and grenades - and there is still sporadic shooting going on. He says they have locked themselves in the room, barricaded the TV unit against the doors and pulled the blind down to protect themselves from broken glass. He says smoke filled their room from fires within the hotel and they had to rip the smoke detector off the wall.

Gunmen have targeted hotels, a tourist attraction and a train station in at least seven attacks in Mumbai, killing 16 people, reports have claimed.

Several people had been wounded in the attacks and police are battling gunmen, who are using automatic weapons.

Gunmen opened fire on the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels. They also attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station and Leopold's restaurant, a landmark.

Thanksgiving will have a bloody tinge in India and perhaps the world.

In perhaps the most shocking attacks in Indian history, a series of bomb blasts and terrorists have laid siege to Mumbai at night. The operation is still going on, with terrorists holed up in the Oberoi Hotel, who appear to be trying to apprehend some American and British tourists.

At least 80 people are reported dead, and major Mumbai landmarks have been targeted.

Earlier there were at least 8 simultaneous incidents of blasts and firing, including AK-47 bearing terrorists who attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal of the Railway Statiion, a taxi blast in Vile Parle, and at the Taj Mahal and Trident Hotels. Trains on the central line have been stopped. Other sites of the attacks include Mazgaon, Leopold's Pub, Metro Junction, Crawford Market and at Colaba.

There are currently at least two terrorists holed up in the Oberoi hotel. The terrorists are reportedly in their 20s and may have about 15 people in their custody.

There are also reports that terrorists have escaped from the Taj Hotel in a police vehicle towards the government offices, Mantralaya, and in a black Honda City from another location. Another report is that two people have been shot, apprehended or confronted after this incident near Juhu-Chowpatty.

CNN, citing its sister network IBN in India, reported an ongoing battle at the five-star Oberoi Hotel where gunmen have reportedly taken hostages after searching out people with U.S. or British passports.

A police constable speaking by phone from headquarters in the southern part of the city said officers there "are under fire" and "there is shooting at the gate."

Update:  Just came across CNBC, Indian TV reporting they're holding 15 foreigners (most likely Americans and Brits) hostage.....

In 1978 I used to spend hours sitting in the lobby of the Taj Mahal in Bombay watching Arabs buy young girls from Muslim fathers for their harem. It used to go on all day. The sheiks used to sit in the lobby in their kaftans twirling their prayer beads, accompanied by their fully burka-clad wifes, and if they liked what they saw they would make a sign and make the deal with the father of the future bride.
