Indonesia: 81 Political Candidates Fail Koran Proficiency Test.....
Heh......
Aceh might be dubbed the "Veranda of Mecca", but that seems to have done little to help the 81 candidates for the Aceh provincial legislative council who failed the Koran proficiency test.
The controversial test, organized by the Aceh Independent Election Committee (KIP), was taken by 1,368 candidates from local and national parties.
"Candidates who failed the test are not eligible to contest the 2009 elections,"KIP candidacy working group chairman Yarwin Adi Dharma said Tuesday.
One prominent Aceh figure, Humam Hamid, said the failure rate was a disgrace as Aceh had already declared itself a province implementing sharia.
"But it turns out that many people are still unable to implement it in their daily lives," he said.

They want islamic sharia law so they require their politicians to know the koran. That actually sounds reasonable.
OK. For the moment, let's turn this around to the U.S.
I once proposed to the Board of Stupidvisors in a California county that all officials, elected and appointed, in the county, be required to take a one week course on the U.S. Constitution and the California Constitution (which is massive), BEFORE assuming the duties of the office, for the purpose of assuring the public that government officials would at least know our Constitutional law and hopefully respect the Constitutional rights of the citizens of the county. At the very least, they couldn't claim ignorance of the law.
It was met with stone cold silence. Went over like a lead baloon. A turd in a punch bowl. Of course it was not accepted nor implemented.
Politicians are the same all over the world. They don't want to know what they don't know so they can do what they want to do whenever they want to do it. Ignorance to them means a clear conscience.
You would have thought that they'd be smart enough to figure out that if they knew the constitutions, they would be better able to figure out how to get around it. But they weren't that smart. They just didn't want to deal with it. Speaks volumes.
