ISLAMABAD: The killing of women for honour is a demand of the tribal traditions, Balochistan Senator Israrullah Zehri informed the Senate on Friday.

Zehri was responding to Senator Yasmeen Shah’s statement in which she had drawn the House’s attention towards reports that five women had been buried alive in Balochistan in the name of honour. She called it a sheer violation of human rights.

Zehri asked the members not to politicise the issue, as it was a matter of safeguarding the tribal traditions.

Leader of the Opposition in Senate Kamil Ali Agha condemned the killing of women in the name of honour and demanded the issue should be referred to the Human Rights Standing Committee of the House.

The foundation for the notion that 'honor killing' is acceptable in Islam comes, as most everything in Islam does, from Muhammad. He declared that the only grounds for the death penalty against a Moslem were: apostasy from Islam ("Whoever changes his 'deen' (Islamic faith), then kill him"), unlawful sexual intercourse (and this can be by extension if a woman is a victim of rape), and, crucially, for "causing mischief in the land". The latter can be interpreted to mean anything which creates dissension or, by not being faithful to islamic teachings, would cause 'the faithful' to fall away or be unsettled or lead to civil strife. Thus, Moslems will often declare other Moslems to be guilty of the latter, as grounds for waging war against them or, in personal, family matters, of 'dishonor.'
