Will Canada choose dhimminess over free speech?.....
Representatives of B.C. Muslims are seeking a ruling from the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal over a 2006 Maclean's magazine article they say discriminated against them and exposed the community to hatred and contempt. The complaint was filed jointly by Canadian Islamic Congress president Mohamed Elmasry of Ottawa and Abbotsford cardiologist Dr. Naiyer Habib, a B.C. director of the congress.
At issue is an Oct. 23, 2006, article that suggested Muslim demographics will soon enable them to overrun countries in Europe and North America.
The article, titled "The Future Belongs to Islam," was an excerpt of Mark Steyn's book, America Alone. It warned that the Muslim world has youth and global ambitions to supplant Western society.
The congress claims the article violated the religious rights of Muslims in B.C. and subjected them to contempt.
The group is seeking monetary compensation, claiming that Maclean's rebuffed them when they attempted to assert their right to reply to the article.
The hearing is scheduled for three days, starting today, at the Provincial Court at Robson Square in Vancouver.
