John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the UN, has brushed off an attempted citizen’s arrest at the Hay Festival in Wales as “comic”.Dismissing Mr Monbiot’s attempted citizen’s arrest as “street theatre”, he claimed not to have been aware of much opposition towards his visit.
“I don’t see a lot of it, I must say,” he said. “I would assess it in the same way I assess Monbiot – as an indication of the larger potential problem.”
Claims have been circulating that he pulled out of a talk today at the Ideas Festival in Bristol because of threats of disruption by the Stop the War coalition. Mr Bolton said they were unfounded.
He said the reason was a contractual dispute over the payment of his expenses between the organisers of the Hay and Bristol festivals.
“I would be delighted to go to Bristol and face the fruitcakes down,” he said.

GUNMEN have shot dead five teenage boys who were returning home after playing a cricket match in the troubled south-western Pakistani province of Baluchistan.ZIPThe teenagers, aged between 15 and 19, were killed today in the provincial capital Quetta, said city police chief Rehmatullah Niazi.
He said three died at the scene and while the other two died in the hospital. Residents said the boys were members of a school cricket team.

Bob Dole yesterday sent a scalding email to Scott McClellan, excoriating the former White House spokesman as a "miserable creature" who greedily betrayed his former patron for a fast buck.
In an extraordinary message obtained and authenticated by Politico, Dole uses his trademark biting wit to portray McClellan as a classic Washington opportunist.
"There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues," Dole wrote in a message sent yesterday morning. "No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique.""In my nearly 36 years of public service I've known of a few like you," Dole writes, recounting his years representing Kansas in the House and Senate. "No doubt you will 'clean up' as the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm. When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, 'Biting The Hand That Fed Me.' The way our government has treated detainees since we embarked on this "war on terror" constitutes nothing short of creating its own form of terrorism and unleashing it upon an entire population.The latest Amnesty International report slams the U.S. (among other countries) for failing to uphold human rights standards. "With breathtaking legal obfuscation, the U.S. administration has continued its efforts to weaken the absolute prohibition against torture and other ill treatment," reads the report. "The U.S. president authorized the CIA to continue secret detention and interrogation, although they amount to the international crime of enforced disappearance. Hundreds of prisoners in Guantanamo and Bagram, and thousands in Iraq, continued to be detained without charge or trial, many for more than six years." Guantanamo cells are so grim that the group is taking a replica of one on a show-and-tell tour, torturers not included, to show us what our tax dollars are paying for. (absolute lie -ed.)

ISLAMIST militants affiliated with the Sharia police in the northeastern Nigerian state of Bauchi have burned six churches and ransacked the palace of the Emir of Ningi after police rescued two teenage girls who had been kidnapped and forcibly converted to Islam.
The anti-Christian pogrom comes amidst increasing sectarian tensions in Northern Nigeria.
Over the past year 13 Christian teenage girls in the town of Ningi have been kidnapped and forcibly converted to Islam. Once they become Muslims, even if by force, the government has been reluctant to act as the state Sharia Council has so far refused to permit their return to their families.In late April, two Christian girls in foster care, Mary Chikwodi Okoye, (15), and Uche Edward, (14) disappeared from their homes in the town of Ningi.
Their foster parents mounted a search and discovered the girls had been kidnapped by Islamist militants and were housed in the palace of the Emir, Mohammad Yunusa Danyaya. The girls had allegedly converted to Islam and were to be married to Muslim men.
Accounts differ as to how the girls were released, as one Nigerian newspaper reported the Emir turned the girls over to their families upon learning of the circumstances of their conversions, while other news sources report the police removed the girls from the palace over the objections of the Emir.
Police took custody of the girls, however, transporting them to safety in Southern Nigeria.

Imams will teach in state schools under Government plans for tackling extremism to be announced next week.Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, admitted today that a minority of children could be “at risk” from extremists and said that schools must be able to deal with radicalisation.
British-born imams will be drafted in to schools to instruct children about Islam and the Koran as part of the Government’s “Prevent” strategy, which aims to weed out extremism before it takes root.
Lessons will include teachings from the Koran and discussions about equality between the sexes, the sanctity of life and the rights of the individual. Mr Balls said the citizenship lessons would help young people to feel “part of their society, and resilient to those who seek to divide rather than unite.
The battle against radicalisation in schools is a major plank of the Home Office’s wider policy on extremism but the National Union of Teachers (NUT) met fierce opposition when it suggested a similar scheme in March. The NUT proposed that Muslim clerics and other faith leaders should go into every state school as an alternative to faith schools. Critics warned this could allow extremists to target pupils.

Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar, whom Israel has agreed to free as part of a possible prisoner swap deal with Hizbullah, has vowed to continue engaging in terror after his release.Kuntar, who was jailed in the Hadarim Prison in the Sharon region 29 years ago, after murdering the Haran family members and two police officers during a terror attack on the northern city of Nahariya, made the promise in a letter to Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
The letter was first published in the Palestinian Authority's official daily newspaper al-Hayat al-Jadida and was revealed by the Palestinian Media Watch.
"My dear and respectable master and commander," Kuntar wrote in the letter to Nasrallah. "Peace be with you and with our shahids (martyrs).
"I give you my promise and oath that my only place will be in the fighting front soaked with the sweat of your giving and with the blood of the shahids, the dearest people, and that I will continue your way until we reach a full victory. I send my best wishes and promise of renewed loyalty to you, sir, and to all the Jihad fighters."

A BLIND seven-year-old student at an Islamic school in eastern Pakistan has died after his teacher punished him for not learning the Koran, police said today.Muhammad Atif was hung upside down from a ceiling fan and severely beaten by his teacher, Qari Ziauddin, at the seminary or madrassa in Vihari, near Lahore on Thursday, they said.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had ordered in inquiry into the death, an official statement said.
"Qari Ziauddin, who teaches Koran to boys in Qari Latif Islamic school, hanged Atif upside down with a ceiling fan in the school after beating him with sticks, which caused his death,'' local police official Akram Niazi said.

One of Britain's most senior policemen says the country should talk to Al Qaeda to try and end their bloody campaign of violence.Sir Hugh Orde, a front-runner to replace Ian Blair as the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said he could not think of a single terrorist campaign that ended without negotiation.
And after 30 years of tackling the IRA Sir Hugh, head of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said he was convinced that policing - detecting plots and arresting people - was not enough alone to defeat terrorists. (you can't compare the IRA to al-Qaeda, it's apples and oranges -ed.)
Asked if he was saying 'we should talk to al Qaeda', Sir Hugh said: 'Well that's the logic of...I don't think that's unthinkable, the question will be one of timing.'
He added: 'If you want my professional assessment of any terrorism campaign, what fixes it is talking and engaging and judging when the conditions are right for that to take place.
'Is that a naive statement? I don't think it is ... It is the reality of what we face.

A senior bishop has been accused of "doing the BNP's work" by claiming radical Islam is filling the gap created by the decline of Christianity in Britain. The Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, this week issued a powerful critique of modern society which he said had begun with the liberal reforms of the 1960s.He claimed the influence of Christianity had been practically wiped out in recent decades, destroying Britishness and leading to the breakdown in family life and an increase in drunkenness and violence.
The bishop, a leading conservative who believes the Church of England should be doing more to convert Muslims, then warned that radical Islam is starting to fill the "moral vacuum" left by the decline in Christianity, which could lead to different values taking hold.
But his words have been condemned by some groups who have accused him of spreading fear and intolerance, and of putting across a similar message to the far-right British National Party.
Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, (if you're a secular group, wouldn't you be more worried about Islam? -ed.) said: "Dr Nazir-Ali's remarks are ill-advised, dangerous and manipulative.
"He is playing a very dangerous game with these repeated scaremongering tactics against Muslims, and risks doing the BNP's work for them.
The NSS, which campaigns against what it calls the privileged position of religious groups in society, called on the Archbishop of Canterbury to discipline the bishop for his remarks and prevent him from making "further inflammatory statements".
"Rowan Williams assures us that interfaith relations are possible – but Dr Nazir-Ali obviously thinks otherwise. (why am I not surprised they're fans of the Archdhimmi? -ed.)

Public school students at Friendswood Junior High in the Houston area have been roped into Islamic training by representatives from the Council on American-Islamic Relations during class time, prompting religious leaders to protest over Principal Robin Lowe's actions. Pastor Dave Welch, spokesman for the Houston Area Pastor Council, confirmed the indoctrination had taken place and called it "unacceptable." "The failure of the principal of Friendswood Junior High to respect simple procedures requiring parental notification for such a potentially controversial subject, to not only approve but participate personally in a religious indoctrination session led by representatives of a group with well-known links to terrorist organizations and her cavalier response when confronted, raises serious questions about her fitness to serve in that role," the pastors' organization said. According to a parent, whose name was withheld, the children were given the Islamic indoctrination during time that was supposed to be used for a physical education class."I am simply trying to get the word out to those whose kids may not have told them about an Islamic presentation that all kids were required to attend," wrote the parent, who was working to assemble protests to the school board.
The pastors said in a statement: "According to students who were forced to attend these sessions, these Islamic evangelists taught them:
- Adam, Noah and Jesus are prophets
- There is one god, his name is Allah
- The 5 Pillars of Islam
- How to pray five times a day
- Islamic religious garb"
The pastors noted that the principal's claim there were "comments" to students on campus was unverified. Nor does that excuse or justify "this infringement upon the religious beliefs of students and parents of the community nor the violation of school policy and possibly state and/or federal law," they said.

Your impressions of the people here seem to be fairly on-point based on my experience. Passionate, undisciplined, warm, exasperating, occasionally insipiring, always interesting. I may have developed a lifelong taste for kebab, goat, and chai. I agree 100% about Petraeus. He has figured it out, and the results show in a place like Anbar province -- it is like night and day, in terms of violence here in Ramadi, versus when we got here a year ago. The question is whether the Iraqis can hold it when we go. A lot of corruption and so forth in the government, but we shall see.The populace, at least, is strongly invested in peace right now. The question is whether the IP and IA can keep the bad dudes from moving back in and terrorizing them when we start to fade out of here. Ha - de facto 11B is right, for a lot of branches, FA included. We had the guns online for maybe two months here before we shut them down and formed PTT teams and moved out into the city.
It was certainly surreal living with a bunch of guys who had been trying to kill Americans a year ago. 3/7 marines had an esp. interesting experience b/c they were here in 2006 and could point to guys by-name, by-face, who were HVTs the last time they were here, who were now officers in the IP and such. There's an anniversary this week we might do well to recall. On May 29, 1453 -- just 555 short years ago -- troops led by Mehmed II broke through the walls of the ancient Christian capital of Constantinople.Mehmed the Conqueror -- as he would be known from that day forward -- rode triumphantly into the city on a white horse. Soon, churches would be converted into mosques. Constantinople would become Istanbul.

When former President Jimmy Carter revealed that Israel has more than 150 nuclear weapons, he clearly had a motive, according to his administration’s deputy senior adviser, Marc Ginsberg: “I think there’s no doubt — particularly given the vantage point I had in the White House at the end of his administration — that he resents the way in which Israel and the American-Jewish community have failed to express sufficient gratitude for his efforts on behalf of peace in the Middle East.“In my judgment, there’s no other explanation,” Ginsberg says.
Ginsberg, a former ambassador to Morocco and now senior global affairs analyst for Fox News, says that Carter knows what he said is something never discussed by America or Israel and that disclosing Israel’s nuclear arsenal is due to his growing antagonism towards the Jewish state.
“There’s no doubt he knows exactly what he is doing when he’s making these statements, or making misrepresentations that Hamas has agreed to recognize Israel if certain conditions occur, or to the book he wrote [‘Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid’] referring to Israel.”
Ginsberg says Carter’s revelation fits into a pattern of mischief on the part of the former president in recent months, “probably fueled by the amount of money the Carter Center is getting from Arab sources.”
Israel and the United States have gone on record as saying Carter’s remarks are irresponsible, but Ginsberg says they are “down right mischievous.”
