A St George's Day parade through an inner-city area hit by race riots has been cancelled following police advice.

Community groups had planned to stage the multi-cultural event in Bradford and 1,500 schoolchildren were due to take part.

Many of the youngsters had already made flags of St George to carry on the parade on April 23, which was designed to boost community cohesion.

But last week police and council chiefs told the organisers that the event could not go ahead as planned for 'health and safety' reasons. At a meeting, police demanded a shorter route which avoided two streets at the centre of the race riots in 2001.

As a result, organisers have decided to call off the event, which was due to attract more than 10,000 people.

"The police and council just kept telling us that the reason for their objection was 'health and safety'. They proposed another route which was ridiculously short. The march would have been over before it began.

"Unfortunately, there's a fear that someone may have used it to cause violence.

"The day seems to have been taken away from us because of fears of thugs. "The council and police say something could go ahead on July 1, but it won't be a St George's Day celebration.'

The Bradford riots in July, 2001, were sparked by the stabbing of a local Asian youth by National Front supporters. They ended with more than 300 police injured and 297 people arrested.

thumbs off in protest at onerous contracts they had made with
middle-men who dealt with the British.

in the chapter by Jasleen Dhamija on "Regional
Weavers of India" in the book "Handwoven Fabrics of
India" edited by Jasleen Dhamija and Jyotindra Jain
published by University of Washington Press in 1990.

The story seems to have arisen from an account written
by a person sacked from the East India Company for
wrongdoing.

This purports to be the text of Macauley's Education
Minute, but it is not: it is a forgery promulgated
by Purohit Bhagawan Dutt, full of self-serving
aggrandisement which largely contradicts the
original meaning of Macauley's words, which are a
broadside against the fusty antiquarianism of our
education policies in Indian in the mid-19th
century.

Macauley took aim at many other organs of British
rule. He was for the freedom of the press, and
championed the view that Indians and Europeans were
equals before the law. He argued for appointing
Indians to high and responsible positions in
government, and for the admission of Indians into
the Indian Civil Service.

Macaulay wanted to promote the intellectual
improvement of the people of India through effective
education (education that would make a real
difference in the practical world), e.g., teaching
them English - which they wanted to learn - instead
of Sankrit. Indian liberals like Rammoham Roy had
already condemned the impracticality of teaching
Sanskrit.

So, what kind of Indian would oppose Macauley?
An Indian who valued the old ways above modern,
outside ways and didn't care if it kept his people
in isolation and grinding poverty: a Hindu Nationalist.
The same kind that turned up in London to complain
when the British Raj banned suttee.
