.....But a researcher who tracks population by religion questions that claim. “The truth of the matter is that the number of Muslims in the world surpassed the number of Roman Catholics long ago,” Todd Johnson, director of the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Mass., told me. He added, “High birth rates in Muslim countries and defections in Catholic Europe were the main two dynamics in causing Muslims to outnumber Catholics in the mid-1980s.” Mr. Johnson said that by 1990, there were 962 million Muslims world-wide and about 930 million Roman Catholics. (By last year, according to his numbers, there also were more Sunni Muslims than Roman Catholics.)

Anyone note the hypocrisy in this story (and similar one's that have been published recently)?

Let's see..."Muslims outnumber Catholics."

A curious thing about all of this: "Muslims" are counted as a monolithic whole, when in actuality they comprise Shi'a, Sunni, Yezidi, Kurd, Alawite, Druze...the list goes on. Yet the count for "Christians" has been subdivided into various sects, with Catholicism singled out.

The answer is simple: someone, somewhere, whoever originally made up this study - wanted to deliberately represent Muslims as outnumbering Christians. Dividing out one Christian group that is (slightly) outnumbered by Muslims is the way to do so.

Funny thing about statistics...they can be represented in many ways, not always truthful. "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics..."

I thought the same thing too when I read it. Plus its pretty easy to keep your numbers when you threaten your followers with death if you leave. I bet they left that little tidbit out.

Exactly correct, Elric. Christians largely are Christians, because they *want* to be; Muslims are told they will be executed if they *don't* want to be Muslim.

There's also the simple fact that Moslem women are treated as nothing more than baby-producing machines as a form of jihad (re Arafat's threat to the Israelis "we will outbreed you"): in some Moslem societies (North Africa and part of ME) the AVERAGE is 7-8 children PER WOMAN. What this really amounts to is a quickly developing food crisis (grains, especially) in Moslem countries, riots, instability,starvation, all because this dead-end cult is set on world domination.
