UK: 40% of Prison Population is Muslim....

Prisons are notorious for radicalizing Muslims. Side note: Another horribly depressing story from Britain, anyone have any good news I can post?.....

Muslims are nearly four times more likely to be in jail in England and Wales compared with the rest of the population, according to the latest official figures.

In a written parliamentary reply, Justice Secretary Jack Straw said that at the end of June 2006 there were 8,243 prisoners declaring themselves as Muslim out of a total prison population of 77,982 at the time.

The number represents 11 percent of all prisoners in contrast to Muslims being just 3 percent of the country's population at the last census in 2001, when some 1.5 million people declared themselves as Muslim.

The figures show a very high percentage of the Muslims are jail are foreign nationals, some 3,285 of the prisoners, equivalent to 40 percent.

Among the foreign nationals, the highest number was 416 from Pakistan, followed by 322 from Somalia, 259 from Iraq, 221 from Turkey, 185 from Nigeria, 179 each from Bangladesh and Nigeria and 163 from Jamaica. (All but Jamaica is Muslim -ed.)

Oh dear.

Given the figures you quote above, 10.5% of the prison population is Muslim - NOT 40% as the headline or your bolded text claims

10.5 % = 100*(8,243 / 77,982)

The 3285 foreign nationals are where the 40% figures come in - i.e. 40% of the Muslims in UK prisons are foreign nationals. This is very different to 40% of all prisoners in UK jails being Muslim!

Be grateful that people aren't sent to jail for either innumeracy or trying to misrepresent the truth to further their agenda.

Even at 10.5 percent given that the Muslim population in general is under 3 thats still a staggering statistic and most foreign nationals come from Islamic countries. Be grateful their are people like us to dispute your multicultural agenda.

Since when has pointing out a mathematical error had anything to do with multiculturalism?

I agree that 10.5% vs 3% is still quite shocking - but not as staggering as the statistic that the above article would prefer as a take-home message.

Learn to read Sparky. Might not make 40 percent but this would put it way closer to 40 percent than 10.5.
