There are plenty of verses the BBC could have used if they felt like being an impartial news organization. As always, they chose not to be....
Koran 9:5. Then when the Sacred Months have passed, then kill the Mushrikun (unbelievers) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (the Islamic ritual prayers), and give Zakat (alms), then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
A military Jihad has to be obey very strict rules in order to be legitimate.
- The opponent must always have started the fighting.
- It must not be fought to gain territory.
- It must be launched by a religious leader.
- It must be fought to bring about good - something that Allah will approve of.
- Every other way of solving the problem must be tried before resorting to war.
- Innocent people should not be killed.
- Women, children, or old people should not be killed or hurt.
- Women must not be raped.
- Enemies must be treated with justice.
- Wounded enemy soldiers must be treated in exactly the same way as one's own soldiers.
- The war must stop as soon as the enemy asks for peace.
- Property must not be damaged.
- Poisoning wells is forbidden. The modern analogy would be chemical or biological warfare.
The Qur'an on Jihad
The Qur'an has many passages about fighting. Some of them advocate peace, while some are very warlike. The Bible, the Jewish and Christian scripture, shows a similar variety of attitudes to war. (Nothing infuriates me more than when shit heads like the BBC say that -ed.)
Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors. Qur'an 2:190
To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged;- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid. Qur'an 22:39
Therefore if they withdraw from you but fight you not, and (instead) send you (Guarantees of) peace, then Allah Hath opened no way for you (to war against them). Qur'an 4:90
But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in Allah: for He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things). Qur'an 8:61

# The opponent must always have started the fighting.
...even after years of our provocations.
# It must not be fought to gain territory.
...unlike us, who claim everywhere a single Muslim has claimed as "theirs."
# It must be launched by a religious leader.
In Islam, you don't even need a mail-order certificate to be one.
# It must be fought to bring about good - something that Allah will approve of.
Good, of course, means "whatever we say it is."
# Every other way of solving the problem must be tried before resorting to war.
Such as Guns, suicide bombers, assaults, stonings, beheadings, et al.
# Innocent people should not be killed.
Category of which does not include any Dhimmis or Infidels.
# Women, children, or old people should not be killed or hurt.
Merely enslaved or raped.
# Women must not be raped.
Disregard this category; obsolete.
# Enemies must be treated with justice.
...the same Justice meted out by the Pedophile Mo.
# Wounded enemy soldiers must be treated in exactly the same way as one's own soldiers.
...triaged for religious beliefs, then saved or killed.
# The war must stop as soon as the enemy asks for peace.
...which means abject surrender.
# Property must not be damaged.
As long as it's our property that isn't damaged; yours doesn't count.
# Poisoning wells is forbidden. The modern analogy would be chemical or biological warfare.
Oh well.

Yow, I screwed up "Property must not be damaged," and said it arse-backwards. Sorry.

No need LAM, you did a better job than I did.

Yes, indeed, LAM certainly did do an excellent job of clarifying things here, for us!

LAM: my congrats, too! I'd only add that the notion of "military jihad" is itself an example of Taqiyya: the real reason for Jihad of all types, violent and 'soft' (donating funds, practising taqiyya, inter-faith groups), is to conquer Fitnah (disbelief of Islam) and that, wherever there is Fitnah (non-Moslems), there is already a "war" against 'allah' which Moslems, as both a community (ummah), and an individual, are required to wage until Islam triumphs. Jihad is a 'holy obligation' on each and all Moslems. So, all the stuff about various conditions necessary in a military jihad are a veil, designed to hide raw hatred and lust for conquest.
