9th Circuit Court of Appeals Rules Pharmacists Can Not Refuse to Dispense Abortion Pill, Requirement Takes Immediate Effect....

When one thinks of liberal activist judges, the 9th Circuit always comes to mind. Next up, Obama's plans to repeal the Bush administration regulations allowing doctors to refuse to provide abortions....

Pharmacists are obliged to dispense the Plan B pill, even if they are personally opposed to the “morning after” contraceptive on religious grounds, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.

In a case that could affect policy across the western U.S., a supermarket pharmacy owner in Olympia, Wash., failed in a bid to block 2007 regulations that required all Washington pharmacies to stock and dispense the pills.

Family-owned Ralph’s Thriftway and two pharmacists employed elsewhere sued Washington state officials over the requirement. The plaintiffs asserted that their Christian beliefs prevented them from dispensing the pills, which can prevent implantation of a recently fertilized egg. They said that the new regulations would force them to choose between keeping their jobs and heeding their religious objections to a medication they regard as a form of abortion.

On Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals lifted the injunction, saying the district court was wrong in issuing it based on an erroneous finding that the rules violated the free exercise of religion clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The 9th Circuit ruling, however, means that the requirement that pharmacies stock and dispense Plan B takes immediate effect, said Joyce Roper, an assistant attorney general for Washington state.

The gunships peppered the convoy with cannon fire and anti-personnel rockets, leaving at least 50 dead, military sources have revealed.

Turkey's prime minister has described ethnic violence in China's Xinjiang region as "a kind of genocide".

"There is no other way of commenting on this event," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

He spoke after a night-time curfew was reimposed in Xinjiang's capital, Urumqi, where Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese clashed last Sunday.

The death toll from the violence there has now risen from 156 to 184, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reports. More than 1,000 people were injured.

Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country, shares linguistic and religious links with the Uighurs in China's western-most region.

"The event taking place in China is a kind of genocide," Mr Erdogan told reporters in Turkey's capital, Ankara.

"There are atrocities there, hundreds of people have been killed and 1,000 hurt. We have difficulty understanding how China's leadership can remain a spectator in the face of these events."

RIYADH (AFP)--A Saudi women's group on Friday blamed the country's religious police in the "honor" killing of two sisters shot dead by their own brother after they were arrested for mixing with unrelated men.

The Society for Defending Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia said the religious police put the sisters' lives in danger when they arrested them and placed them in a Riyadh women's shelter.

The two women, identified as Reem, 21, and Nouf, 19, were murdered after they left the shelter July 5.

The brother shot them in the presence of their father who, according to newspaper reports, quickly forgave the son because he was defending the family's honor.

But the society blamed the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, or the religious police, for sparking the brother's anger over his family's honor by arresting the girls in the first place.

"The hands of the religious police, as well as the brother's hands, are stained with the blood of these innocent young women," the group said in a statement. "These women have not committed any crime to be killed in a such brutal way."

Key House Democrats decided Friday to raise taxes on the wealthy to help pay for health care legislation, capping an up-and-down week for President Barack Obama's top domestic priority. At the same time, Democratic leaders tried to quell concerns among moderate and conservative lawmakers about other elements of the bill.

"We're closer to that significant reform than at any time in recent history. That doesn't make it easy. It's hard," Obama said while traveling overseas.

Democrats on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee agreed to a new surtax that would start with households making $350,000 a year and begin in 2011, said the committee's chairman, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y.

It would raise some $540 billion over 10 years, about half the cost of Obama's ambitious plan to reshape the nation's health care system and provide care to the 50 million uninsured. However, lawmakers could not provide an exact price tag of the overall bill.

Obama asked the pope to pray for Kennedy, a member of one of the United States' most prominent Roman Catholic families and a politically ally to Obama.

Hillary Rodham Clinton was more like what they had in mind – and Sarah, well, she was the un-Hillary.

Democrats on the House Intelligence panel are calling for a full-scale investigation into allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency misled Congress multiple times over the past eight years.

Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois said in a recent letter to the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee that the CIA's actions were inexcusable and called for lawmakers to launch an immediate investigation into the agency's alleged deception.

Democrats say that CIA Director Leon Panetta informed Congress in late June that his agency had been withholding important information about a secret program, begun after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Schakowsky announced today that the director has terminated the "very serious" covert program without the knowledge of Congress.

In response, Panetta is also launching an internal probe at his agency to determine why Congress was not told about the program.

Earlier this week, another recently publicized letter sent from seven Democrats on the Intelligence Committee to the director asked him to publicly admit that his agency had deceived Congress for several years. The release of the letter Wednesday reignited a continuing dispute between the spy agency and congressional Democrats.

In a CNN exclusive interview, Pakistan military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said in return for any role as a broker between the United States and the Taliban, Pakistan wants concessions from Washington over Islamabad's concerns with longtime rival India.

And senior U.S. officials have told CNN the Obama Administration is willing both to talk to top Taliban leaders and to raise some of Pakistan's concerns with India.

The tiny mouse that became a hotly disputed symbol of wasteful spending in the $787 billion economic stimulus bill has returned to pester House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Obama administration revealed last week that as much as $16.1 million from the stimulus program is going to save the San Francisco Bay Area habitat of, among other things, the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse.

That has revived Republican criticism that the pet project was an "invisible earmark" in the massive spending bill for Mrs. Pelosi, whose San Francisco district abuts the Bay, and epitomizes what Republicans say is the failure of stimulus spending so far to help an economy still shedding jobs.

"Lo and behold, the government has announced that the mouse is getting its money after all," House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said, standing beside a poster of the furry varmint. "Speaker Pelosi must be so proud."

Mrs. Pelosi's office was quick to dismiss the criticism.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill called the attack on the mouse "a tired and tried tale of Republican desperation," noting that the mouse was never mentioned in the legislation and the project competed with other restoration jobs for stimulus dollars.

Mr. Hammill said the Bay project benefited both the economy and the ecosystem.

"Wetlands restoration projects, such as this one, not only create jobs, but improve the environment," he said. "Wetlands filter contaminants from the waters of the Bay, protect our shores against sea level rise, and provide habitat for a myriad of wildlife, including several endangered species."

He stressed that the salt marshes are not in the speaker's urban district and the harvest mouse never inhabited the city.

Two San Francisco Bay Area projects were among 50 marine and coastal habitat restoration projects undertaken by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with $167 million from the stimulus, dubbed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

About $7.6 million went to restore more than 1,990 acres comprising three former salt ponds in the southern end of San Francisco Bay and $8.5 million went to restore wetlands in American Canyon salt pond, also in the Bay Area.

The pope gave Obama, who last March lifted restrictions of federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, a copy of a recent Vatican document on bio-ethics in which the Holy See explains it opposition to such practices.

"Dignitas Personae" (dignity of a person) condemns artificial fertilization and other techniques used by many couples and also says human cloning, "designer babies" and embryonic stem-cell research were immoral.

It defends life from conception to natural death.

For those concerned about stimulus spending, the General Services Administration sends word tonight that $18 million in additional funds are being spent to redesign the Recovery.gov Web site.

The new Web site promises to give taxpayers more information about where their money is going than the current version of the site.

“Recovery.gov 2.0 will use innovative and interactive technologies to help taxpayers see where their dollars are being spent,” James A. Williams, commissioner of GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, says in a press release announcing the contract awarded to Maryland-based Smartronix Inc.

The contract calls for spending $9.5 million through January, and as much as $18 million through 2014, according to the GSA press release.

None of the 100 men, some getting married for the first time, or 100 women were older than 25, and all were dressed in black and loyal to Hamas.

Robert Spencer, publisher of the anti-Islam Internet hate site "Jihad Watch," is scheduled to speak July 12 on a panel, titled "Perspectives on Islam: Beyond the Stereotyping," at the ALA annual conference in Chicago. One other panelist already withdrew in protest over Spencer's participation.

The former lieutenant governor of Maryland began her column, titled "Without a Doubt: Why Barack Obama represents American Catholics better than the pope does," with the context of the pope’s upcoming meeting with the American president, and how it was “much anticipated and in some circles frowned upon by American Catholics in the wake of Obama’s controversial Notre Dame commencement speech in May.”

She then laid out her central thesis about these two leaders: “In truth, though, Obama’s pragmatic approach to divisive policy...and his social-justice agenda reflect the views of American Catholic laity much more closely than those vocal bishops and pro-life activists...[T]hey’ll politely disagree about reproductive freedoms and homosexuality, but Catholics back home won’t care, because they know Obama’s on their side. Afghanistan: Mujahideen Detonate Massive Truck Bomb Near School, 25 Killed Including 13 Kids....

An overturned truck rigged with explosives blew up near Kabul on Thursday, killing 25 people including many school students in one of the deadliest blasts this year in war-torn Afghanistan, police said.

Loaded with firewood, the truck overturned overnight about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of the capital in Logar province and exploded as authorities were trying to remove the vehicle in the early morning, they said.

At least 13 of those killed were children from a nearby school,said Kamaluddin Zadran, a provincial official "The civilians include school students and male elders. Four others including three students and one civilian man have been wounded," he said.

The students were struck as they were going to area schools -- the first educates pupils aged nine to 12 years old and the second students aged between 16 and 18, locals said.

Some of the children who died in the explosion were believed to be aged 10 to 12 years. Police said some bodies were burned beyond recognition.

TEL AVIV – Hamas does not need to recognize Israel's existence as a precondition for joining a Palestinian unity government, a top member of the Palestinian Authority's negotiating team told WND.

"We are not demanding Hamas recognize the state of Israel. It's not even part of the talks. Even we as the Fatah movement didn't recognize the state of Israel," said the PA negotiator, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The negotiator is leading efforts to forge a unity government between Hamas and PA President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party. The two have been at odds since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip from Fatah in the summer of 2007. The unity efforts could result in new Palestinian elections as early as January and would bring Hamas into the U.S.-backed and funded PA.

Fatah is considered moderate by Israeli and U.S. policy. However, contrary to popular perception, Fatah has never officially recognized Israel as a Jewish state or even as a country with the right to exist.

Supermax Prison Says Obama's Book Objectionable, Won't Let Prisoners Read Them....

McLEAN, Va. — The federal government's most secure prison has determined that two books written by President Barack Obama contain material "potentially detrimental to national security" and rejected an inmate's request to read them.

Ahmed Omar Abu Ali is serving a 30-year sentence at the federal supermax prison in Florence, Colo., for joining al-Qaida and plotting to assassinate then-President George W. Bush. Last year, Abu Ali requested two books written by Obama: "Dreams from My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope."

But prison officials, citing guidance from the FBI, determined that passages in both books contain information that could damage national security.

A prison spokeswoman referred questions to the FBI, where a spokeswoman was looking into the matter Thursday evening.

The documents detailing the prison's rejection of Obama's books are included in court papers for a resentencing hearing scheduled later this month for Abu Ali, a U.S. citizen.

Al Shabaab, which controls large tracts of south Somalia and parts of the capital Mogadishu, has carried out such executions before, but the beheadings on Friday were believed to be the largest number of killings at one time, Somalis say.

"Al Shabaab told us that they were beheaded for reasons they described as being Christian followers and spies,"said one relative, who gave his name only as Aden, after the killings in the south-central town of Baidoa.

(Times Online)- What was once a grocery shop is now a blackened mess. Two boys in shorts and singlets play in the rubble but the usual occupants are absent. Five days ago a Han Chinese family was butchered in this small shop — victims of the Uighurs who rampaged through Urumqi.

Yu Dongzhi described how he clawed through the smoking ruins of the store to search for the family who lived there. He hoped to find his sister, Yu Xinli; her husband, Zhang Mingying; their 13-year-old son; her elderly mother-in-law; and a nephew aged 27.

The police helped him to dig among sacks of flour and bottles of rice wine melted by the heat of the blaze.

As The Timesstood outside what is left of No 447 Zhongwan Street, a Han neighbour approached. She had watched the killings from her home in an apartment block overlooking the store.

“We saw hundreds of Uighurs running down the street on the afternoon of July 5. About ten suddenly rushed into the store. They began to hit the people inside, even the old mother, with bricks and stones. They tried to run outside. Then they were dragged back inside.

“There were terrible screams. Just wordless screams. But then very quickly they fell silent.”

She said that the son tried to hide in a chicken coop but was dragged out and his head was cut off. All the victims were left to burn inside the building. The corpses of the boy and his father were found beheaded. Mr Yu said: “Even the 84-year-old mother was stoned and then burnt. It was terrible, terrible. So cruel.”

From today's Ha'aretz: "Netanyahu appears to be suffering from confusion and paranoia. He is convinced that the media are after him, that his aides are leaking information against him and that the American administration wants him out of office. Two months after his visit to Washington, he is still finding it difficult to communicate normally with the White House. To appreciate the depth of his paranoia, it is enough to hear how he refers to Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod, Obama's senior aides: as "self-hating Jews."

Apparently, the pressure from the United States is getting to Bibi. I guess he got used to the idea of an Elliot Abrams who, while working in the White House, sabotaged every Bush policy he could on behalf of the Greater Israel concept. He literally called the Israelis and told them not to pay attention to Secretary of State Colin Powell when the General went to the region to promote an Israeli-Palestinian agreement.

Powell worked his tail off to get the Israelis to agree to a ceasefire with the Palestinians only to discover later that Abrams had already given the prime minister the heads up: don't listen to Powell. He doesn't speak for the administration.

And then there was Perle and Feith and Wurmser and Bolton and a slew of other Greater Israel boys who proudly used their positions to ensure that Israel would keep the West Bank forever.

And now they are gone, discredited, never to return.

It's a new day. Whether or not Rahm or Axelrod are "self-hating Jews" is irrelevant. Who cares? They are top aides to the President of the United States. And their loyalty is to him -- not to mention their country.

Appearing on MSNBC Thursday afternoon, Washington Post writer and founder of the paper’s On Faith blog, Sally Quinn, exclaimed of Sarah Palin: "Well, clearly, she has not put her family first...And these children have, it seems publicly, to have been exploited by her in a, I think, really unfortunate way."

Even anchor David Shuster, who on Wednesday declared that Palin had "no future" politically, questioned Quinn’s accusation: "Sally, the use of the word ‘exploited’ is pretty strong. Give us some specific examples that you think qualifies for that?" Quinn was happy to elaborate: "Well, you know, she brings them all to the convention, including Trig, the baby. She brings the pregnant daughter with the boyfriend who clearly didn't want to be there. She then travels around with the children, using them as sort of photo ops...she brings the children up when she needs them to shore up her own image."

Quinn even seemed to blame Palin for defending her family against David Letterman’s attacks: "It just seemed to me that the David Letterman situation where she whipped that up into a huge scene, bringing in her other daughter Willow and making a big – a big to-do about it when she could have just let it go."

New al-Qaeda Book Written by Senior Commander Shows They're "Deathly Afraid" of Drone Airstrikes and Deeply Paranoid of "Muslim Spies" Giving Away Their Positions....

A new book published by Al Qaeda shows that the terrorist group is under intense pressure and in “deathly fear” of U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Pakistan, terror experts say.

The 150-page book, titled “Guide to the Laws Regarding Muslim Spies,” was recently posted on jihadist Web sites. It was written by a senior Al Qaeda commander, Abu Yahya Al-Libi, and features an introduction by Ayman Al-Zawahri, the No. 2 man in Al Qaeda.

The book accuses some in Al Qaeda’s ranks of being spies who provide intelligence, including information about Al Qaeda camps and safehouses, to U.S. forces. According to the book, these “Muslim spies” have allowed the U.S. to use its Predator drone campaign to paralyze Al Qaeda leadership.

“It would be no exaggeration to say that the first line in the raging Crusader campaign waged by America and its allies against the Muslims and their lands is the network of spies, of various and sundry sorts and kinds,” says the book, translated by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI

“Their effects are seen: carnage, destruction, arrest, and pursuit, but they themselves remain unseen, just like Satan and his ilk who see us while remaining unseen.”

Terror experts have called the book unique in its weak and worried tone.

“I haven’t ever seen this kind of language from senior Al Qaeda commanders before,” said Daniel Lev, who works for MEMRI. “In general, Al Qaeda speaks in a very triumphant tone,”but in the new book Al-Libi speaks of the group’s dire straits and serious problems, Lev added.

“Such an admission of distress on the part of a senior Al Qaeda commander makes this a very unique book in terms of the author.”

FOX News military analyst Tom McInerny said the book is a “gold mine” that attests to the success of the Predator strikes that are decimating Al Qaeda’s ranks in Pakistan.

“They are in deathly fear of airpower,” said McInerny, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Air Force. “Whether it’s unmanned drones or whether it’s fighters or bombers using precision weapons, they are deathly afraid.”

The books also displays a deep-seated paranoia of hidden enemies, according to MEMRI. It claims that anyone — from the old and infirm to the imam of a mosque — could be a U.S. spy.

“The danger of these spies lies not only in the ability of these hidden ‘brigades’ to infiltrate and reach to the depths,” the book says.

American Commander of al-Shabaab Releases Audio Tape Mocking Obama, Threatens Attack on Homeland....

An American who left the United States to join an Al Qaeda-linked group in Somalia is strongly condemning President Obama’s efforts to seek “a new beginning” with the Muslim world, mocking Obama's “magic of charisma” and warning of more attacks against U.S. interests.

“Despite the fact that you have been ... forced [by Muslim fighters] to at least pretend to extend your hand in peace to the Muslims, we cannot and shall not extend our hands,” said the man in the audiotape, identified by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) as Abu Mansour al-Amriki. “Rather, we shall extend to you our swords, until you leave our lands.”

The 20-minute audiotape, called "The Beginning of the End," was posted Thursday on several jihadist web sites as a direct response to Obama’s much-publicized speech in Cairo on June 4, when he promised “a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world.”

“Let this not come as a surprise to those who are mesmerized by Obama’s speech in Cairo, our positions ... have not changed in the least,”al-Amriki said, in the transcription provided by MEMRI. “If we study his words carefully, we can note very clearly that this new beginning is still heavily based upon American interests … [Obama spoke] not because he loves the Muslims he lived with in Indonesia, as a boy, but rather, it is because the only way to defeat the Muslims is by distracting them with this temporary life.”

Al-Amriki, speaking in English throughout the audio tape, also said Obama’s speechwriters made “one major miscalculation.”

“A Muslim doesn’t look to peace, security, education, work, or the love of any other number of things as his ultimate goals,” al-Amriki said. “Instead, a Muslim is always working and striving to please the one true Creator."

Al-Amriki joined al-Shabaab before the new wave of recruits from Minneapolis. A law enforcement official told FOX News earlier this year that al-Amriki, described as in his late 20s or early 30s, is originally from the United States but has been in Somalia "for some time." It’s unclear what al-Amriki’s given name is.

Representatives of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) met on Wednesday with officials of the German embassy in Washington, D.C., to convey a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel about criticisms over the "silence" of the European state on the Islamaphobia-motivated killing of the woman.

"There is a growing perception that the German government was slow to condemn this bias-motivated act of violence and has not addressed the underlying Islamophobia that can lead to such tragic incidents," CAIR said in the letter.

"We are also concerned that the ban in several German states on Muslim teachers wearing hijab may serve to legitimize the type of Islamophobic views held by [the woman's] attacker."

An average of 20 Jordanian women are killed annually in honor killings. The government has tried to solve the problem with harsher sentences for perpetrators.

The YouTube video, which the NYPD is investigating, ends with the slogan "Death to America" appearing on the screen.

It evokes the terrorist-produced videos of the decapitations of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl and American entrepreneur Nicholas Berg.

The Fiberglas statue, which stands 8 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds, until June 21 stood outside the Vox Pop shop on Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park.

As Liberty's head is being sawed off in the video, the words, "We don't want your freedom" are flashed on the screen.

WASHINGTON — Billions of dollars in federal aid delivered directly to the local level to help revive the economy have gone overwhelmingly to places that supported President Obama in last year's presidential election.

That aid — about $17 billion — is the first piece of the administration's massive stimulus package that can be tracked locally. Much of it has followed a well-worn path to places that regularly collect a bigger share of federal grants and contracts, guided by formulas that have been in place for decades and leave little room for manipulation

"There's no politics at work when it comes to spending for the recovery," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says.

Counties that supported Obama last year have reaped twice as much money per person from the administration's $787 billion economic stimulus package as those that voted for his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, a USA TODAY analysis of government disclosure and accounting records shows. That money includes aid to repair military bases, improve public housing and help students pay for college.

(Tayyar)- The head of the "Loyalty to the Resistance" (Hezbollah) parliamentary bloc, MP Mohammad Raad met with a visiting delegation of British senators headed by counterpart Andrew Love on Thursday, as part of the recent contacts between Hezbollah and British officials.
 
"The talks covered the situation in Lebanon and the region in addition to ongoing efforts to form a government of national unity," said a brief statement issued by both sides after the meeting.

The statement added that both sides agreed to "continue dialogue on issues of common interest".

Last week, Raad held two-hour talks with British Ambassador to Lebanon Mary Frances Guy to pave the way for Thursday's meeting.

In March, Britain reopened contacts with Hezbollah after it joined the national unity government last year.
